Thessaloniki - Berlin via Budapest - a road trip to remember!
14/08/2014 21:34Travelling by car,bus or train may not be the quickest or easiest way but it sure is the best one to take in the scenery,get to know your surroundings and feel the transition from one place to the next. So join us in a trip through three countries and a lot of miles as we experience new cultures,different food,and revive our body and spirit. After all,isn't that what travelling is all about?
1st Day: Get in a bus from Thessaloniki and 18 houts later find yourself in magnificent Budapaest! If you are not too tired from the trip join a free walking tour that takes you from Vorosmarty Square all the way to the Fish Market in two and a half hours while going past some of the most important sights and informing you about Hungary's history. In the fish Market treat yourself to Hungary's traditional drink-unicum-while enjoying an overall view of the Danube and the imposing Parliament.Finish your day back where you began,in Vorosmarty Squre savouring a traditional Langos topped with yoghurt and cheese to the sound of live music,surrounded by locals and tourists alike!
2nd Day: A train ride and twelve hours later,find yourself in diverse Berlin. Make sure to buy your tickets online in advance from MAV to get the cheapest price.
3rd Day: Tiergarten. Walk through lush greenery next to the river Spree in one of Berlin's biggest parks.Enjoy Bellevue,the President's residence,Victoria's Column and in the end of your idyllic walk The Brandeburg Tor! Walk past the Reichstag or climb up its Dom.Just make sure to make a reservation online before you get there or you'll find yourself waiting in line for quite a long time. A well deserved Berliner Pils awaits you in the neighbouring beergarden!Revived, walk past the Tor towards Holocaust Memorial and Potsdamer Platz with its famous Sony Center.If all this walking made you hungry ,taste a currywurst and finish off with delicious ice cream!
4th Day: Mitte. Berlin's historic centre is a sightseeing delight. Begin your walk from Brandeburg Tor and through Unter den Linden arrive in Friedrichstrasse and turn right to find Checkpoint Charlie and the picturesque Gendlmarkt,one of Berlin's most beautiful squares. Find yourself back in den Linden and take in the imposing buildings in either side until you reach the Dom ,the Opera,the University and the famous Museum island where there are 5 of the most important museums in Berlin. DDR is also around the corner and you can take glimpses of life in East Berlin,the houses,cars,even the way they spent their vacation. End your day in AlexanderPlatz with the famous Television Tower,the Neptune Fountain and the Universal Clock. You can climb up the 40th floor in Park Inn hotel and enjoy the view or join the crowd in the Platz with the various street artists and counters selling from food to clothes.
5th Day: Retrace your steps back to AlexandrPlatz,walk past the red Rathaus and reach the birtplace of Berlin,the Nikolai district with the Nikolai church and quaint buildings. After that,walk to Hackeshe Hofe and lose yourself in the labyrinth courtyards. You can enjoy your meal there or walk to Hackese markt and taste local dishes to the sound of live music. A boat ride in Spree is a wonderful way to get on with your day and ,why not, finish it dancing and eating pizza in the famous Clarchen Ballhaus?It is definitely worth a visit!
6th Day: Charlottenburg. Visit Charlottenburg Palace and enjoy a walk in its beautiful gardens. Walk out of the palace and why not continue your day with some shopping in KADEWE,one of Europe's biggest malls. And when you are done shopping visit the impressive delicattessen on the top floor and enjoy your meal or coffe and the view of the city.If you have children a visit to Berlin's biggest zoo is an excellent idea. Otherwise, you can enjoy Brerlin's vibrant nightlife with its many bars and world famous clubs.
7th Day: Fridriechshain. Walk the mile of the East Side Gallery with the graffitti on the remaining part of the Wall and admire one of Brlin's most impressive bridges, the Obermauer Brucke. In the area you can find Berlin's version of beach bars as well as a lot of pubs and bars. Visit Berlin's biggest park,Volspark,with its Fairy tale mountain and lay back in the sun along with the locals. If it is Sunday you can walk up to Mauer Park with its vibrant flea market and live music.
8th Day: Potsdam. Buy an ABC zone day pass and in 15 minutes find yourself in Potsdam with its Sansucci Palace and impressive gardens. There is a lot to see and do there, but make sure to save some time for the city centre as well. The Dutch quarters is a beautiful place to walk and enjoy your meal. Plus,a short walk up the road gets you to the Russian neighbourhood with its quaint wooden houses.
9th Day: Save this day for a trip to the museums and be prepared for long queueing!Alternatively you can head to Wansee and enjoy a day of fun in the sun!
10th Day; Take the train from Berlin back to Budapest and if you have time visit Prague or Vienna, or head back to Greece and visit one of its many beautiful islands! Have fun!
