The River

He could hear the river roaring beneath his window. The melting of the snow had caused the overflow and now all he could make out in the darkness were white waves whirling away. He looked up in the sky. He realised, maybe for the first time, the number of stars out there. He felt as if the mountains could keep the rest of the world away. There was nothing else but him,the river and the stars.

And amidst all this tranquility he could sense tension building up inside him. Her tension. The look in her eyes as he closed the door behind him. It took him but a minute to tear down all he had been building a lifetime. A company,a house,a marriage. And it felt so right. He could finally breathe again. She would understand, eventually. She had to.

He let the flowing river run inside him, calm him, take her eyes  with it,and finally free him to start over again.
