The Leak

05/03/2015 14:02

She entered the house and dropped her bag on the floor, on a pile of unpaid bills and unopened letters. She crossed the small hallway and slowly made her way to the living room. She put on the side some clothes cluttering the sofa and let out a sigh as she squeezed herself in the small space she had created. She closed her eyes and tried to ignore the stench peering through her nostrils. Maybe it ws about time she picked up and threw away the pizza boxes stacking up on the floor. Or maybe she could do it later. All she wanted right now was to just close her eyes and make everything disappear.

The sound of water running in the toilet kept nagging on her ears. Drop after drop at fist, more like a waterfall now. She was sure to drown in her sleep if the leak in the flush kept on like that. She smiled at the prospect and made her way to the kitchen. She went through the unwashed dishes in the sink, picked up a mug and made herself some coffee.

She kept the mug, warm between her hands, and stood in front of the window. Her mother had called earlier. She said she was worried about her,she was going to come see her. It's been a while since her mother came to visit. It was before that man had attacked her. When the clothes had been  lined up in her wardrobe, the dishes washed, the floor cleaned and the house had smelled of lemons and freshly cooked meals. When she would have called the plumber to fix the leak.
