Trieste. A city  usually chosen as a layover due to its convenient location, its port, and proximity to nearby Venice and Istria. A city that, once there, will pleasantly surprise you.  And, maybe, in some cases the layover will prove worthier than the final destination!

In Trieste, everything of interest is within walking distance.  You can begin your stroll from the impressive Piazza Unita d'Italia, one of Europe's most beautiful squares and enjoy a cappuccino with a delicious croissant in one of its traditional cafes.  Then, walk up the hill to San Giusto, Trieste's Cathedral, after you've stopped at Teatro Romano, the Roman Theatre that can hold about 6000 spectators.  As for the Cathedral, it will impress you with the co-existence of Catholic and  Orthodox features and Romanesque style as well as Gothic relief work depicting San Giusto, the city's patron Saint.  You can also visit the castle at the top of the hill and enjoy the beautiful sights of the sea and the city.  Your steps will now take you downhill to the Grand Canal and one of its cafes or restaurants for a drink, or an "aperitivo" as the locals call it, that is served with a bite to eat. Refreshed, take the opportunity to enjoy a walk along the promenade and take in the beautiful sunset.  And, as the day turns into night, Trieste holds one final surprise for you, with its beautiful illuminations that will enchant you and forever capture the heart of true romantics.  Finish your wandering where it all began, in Piazza Unita d'Italia, and, if you are lucky, enjoy an open air concert. The perfect ending to a perfect day.  If you are forunate enough and have a day to spare, make sure to take a boat ride to Miramare Castle with its breathtaking sea view and scenic gardens!

Trieste. An unexpected surprise that will stay in your heart!
