Too Late

He found himself up to his knees in mud, eyes searching, desperate for a sound. A sound that would make the difference between life and death, light  and darkness.

It was his first assignment and he could see it clearly now. He wasn't cut out for this. He simply couldn't do it. Certainly not for the next thirty years. Set out every day and not know. Not know if in the end of the day he would bring home hope or shutter someone's life for ever. He shouldn't have listened to anyone else. He should have followed his own instict instead.

And that's when he heard it. His colleague's voice, clear as crystal. " Found the boy. Too late".

He closed his eyes, brought in mind the boy's photo from the missing person's report, smiling, eyes sparkling, and he shivered. For a moment he thought he could hear the boy's laughter. He knew that if everyone stopped being so loud, they would hear it too. He was sure of it.

He made his way out of the muddy lake and into the forest. That's where it was coming from. The laughter. Growing louder and louder. And as he was going deeper into the forest he knew. He shouldn't have listened to anyone else Follow his own instict insted. Too late now.

So deep in the forest he went
