The Yellow Daisies

She first realised she loved him the day he brought her flowers. Beautiful, yellow daisies. Delicate and fragrant. "Just like you",he had said. "And just as radiant".

She hadn't felt as radiant the past few months. Tons and tons of make up but the result was dim. She was also running out of excuses to stay off of work. And she did like her job.

There was the slightest sound from the hallway outside the flat. She felt the hair at the back of her neck stand up. Took a deep breath in, checked everything was in place, herself in the mirror, a hideous sight, bruises still visible under all that make up, went to the door and waited for him to come in.

Hours later she still waited. This time for the door to close behind him as he left.. Sprawled all over the floor, trying to pull herself together, make sure nothing was broken. Other than the vase, that was.

And she finally realised she had to leave him that night. The night he trampled all over the beautiful, yellow daisies, after having thrown, full force, at her the vase he had put them in a few hours earlier, along with yet another of his apologies and promises that "it would never happen again".
