A Single Gunshot

She felt his nails digging deep on the back of  her neck.  She could feel the blood streaming down her spine, hot tears down her cheeks. Physical pain came almost as a relief. A release of the psychological anguish leading up to that moment.

It was just him and her in the dead of night, deep in the forest.  It wouldn't be long now.  A serene sense of calm took over her.  She steeled herself, closed her eyes, for the worst was yet to come.

A single gunshot to the head.  That's all it took.  And all that blood.  Everywhere. On her face, clothes, even in her eyes now.  All that blood.  Only it wasn't hers.  His skull looked as if it had exploded.

A single, precise gunshot.  That's all it took.  And she was saved.
